Tree growers association in the Sissala West constituency on Friday held their first annual general meeting to elect focal and community reps to oversee all tree planting activities in the District. The focal persons from all the clans within the District will make sure they register interested farmers who want to join the association and collect dues for the upkeep of the association whiles channeling their concerns to necessary agencies for redress. They would also lead farmers to make decisions on which type of plants they need to grow that will be beneficial to them.
The Patron of the association Mr. Laatuo Basin disclosed that the association was formed five months before the meeting with the intend to prepare for all tree planting intervention such as government’s planting for jobs and other projects apart from the individual cashew and mango farms that already exist. They however, aimed at changing the poor and deplorable vegetative cover of Sissala West District that signals the nearness of desert, allowing for remedies to apprehend such occurrence by planting trees.
They have agreed to grow cashew, mango and then cassia which takes three years to rejuvenate and can be used for charcoal burning to spare the economic trees in the terrain. Members of the association were assured by MOFA for consideration for any tree planting intervention since they availed themselves but were urged to avoid Bush burning in other to sustain the vision and as well be united for realization of their vision. The forestry service division has also pledged to support the tree growers association of Sissal West to grow more trees. Madam Hamidu Fati rep of Sissala West DCE called for inclusion of women in association and their activities since women could play a major role to bring success regarding the association’s vision.
