Parents especially fathers have been advised to get closer to their girl child as a strategy to containing the scourge of increasing sexual intercourse among teenagers in the Sissala East District.
You would recall that an annual health review for 2017 by Ghana Health Service showed a very disturbing figures of Sissala East with Kulfuo recording 50,Kunchorkor-20,Nabugubelle-46,Nabulo-60,Sakai-43,Wellembelle-49 and Tumu  with 125 teenagers who got pregnant.
Sister Paulina Yawala a Girls Child Coordinator and Sister Mercy Nyame ,Women in Technical Education Officer of the Ghana Education Service were on the Masie Breakfast on RadfordFM  to discuss the rate of teenage pregnancy in Sissala East.
Madam Paulina wants Ghana Health Service to go into the family background of the affected girls whether they are living with their own parents or in broken homes. This will let us know the category of children mostly suffering this phenomenon, she appealed to to parents to get closer to their wards, guide them, talk sex to them and help them with their needs.
Madam Mercy Nyame wants Ghana Health service to look further at what she describes as different ages for Health insurance where most girls underdeclare ages rather than their real ages just to benefit from the Health insurance package, saying these ages are sometimes different from their voter age ,and this can affect the data gathered.
The claims of 50 teenagers pregnant for kulfuo for example, is alarming and must be examined properly to know whether that represents their real age or the ones on the NHIA cards. That notwithstanding  Sister Mercy has asked for support and respect  for women by being responsible to their needs and not leave girls in the care of their mothers alone.
Nyuasun Saani is the Disease Control Officer of the Ghana Health Service in Tumu who joined via telephone explained the figures are gotten from the teenagers visit to the CHPS when they are pregnant with Information extracted from their health insurance  and other history. Mr Saani says the figures represents Sub–Districts made up of four or five communities and not single communities. He opines the focus should be on why teenagers are being sexually active at a tender age,a situation he says is worrying.
