Upon series of warnings to illegal rosewood contractors to end rosewood harvest after 31stDecember, 2017 by the Sissala East District assembly,, some illegal rosewood contractors have violated the law and still harvesting rosewood which have been confiscated by Forestry Commission in Tumu with the help of the Police this was disclosed by by Manager of Forestry Commission Mr. Gesper Yao Dunyah who told Radford FM last week.
Rosewood permit was granted to all regions from July last year but work commence in the Sissala East in the first week October with 8 contractors officially, “the temporal closer of the permit was to end on 31st December,2017 than after which all contractors are liable to renew their mandate”. The Truck contains two containers full of dried rosewood which were apprehended at Gbenebisi in the Sissala East district, which is 105KM to Tumu. “My people on patrols saw them loading it, so we apprehended and two gentlemen showed up claiming ownership, Mr. Dunyah said “since they are not contractors that were permitted with mandate they could not transport the items hence the confiscation”.
The District Officer says their next cause of action is to seek court clearance after the ban before the logs will be disposed off to a legitimate contractor who will then pay the money to government chest as demanded by our laws and regulations of Timber harvesting procedures.
He warned the public to desist from the activity.
