The National Identification authority has included Sisaali in the National Identity Register after a petition by Sissala Youth Forum when the authority initially did not give room for the dialect in the register.
When the registration exercise began in July 2018, people from the Sissala ethnic group were only allowed to enter Dagaare as their spoken language instead of Sisaali that is the mother tongue of all Sissala people in the Upper West region of Ghana.
This decision by NIA received public backlash and further inspired many ethnic groups in Ghana including Sissala to petition the Authority for inclusion of all spoken languages in the country. The Sissala youth forum petitioned NIA on 22nd August 2018 which In reply to the petition dated 29th August 2018 signed by Joseph Kofi Iroko, head of legal compliance. It stated that “on behalf of the National Identification Authority, I write to inform you that the Sisaali language spoken by our compatriots from the Sissala traditional area in the Upper West Region of the Republic of Ghana has been recognized and duly incorporated into the National Identity Register”.
He further expressed ” i wish to assure you and indeed all Ghanaians that the NIA takes its statutory mandate of registering and issuing Ghana Card to Ghanaians living in the country and abroad seriously and will, contrary to the suggestion to that effect in your petition, never deliberately seek to exclude any ethnic group or language from being identified as by law required. It important to add that long before receipt of your petition, NIA had taken steps to address your concern by updating the content of the National Identity Register to include the Sisaali language” the letter stated.
The letter was copied to the Hon. Minister for Monitoring and Evaluation and all Assemblies in the Sissala enclave and also to the Chairman of the NIAs Governing Board. President of the Sissala Youth Forum Mr. Mumuni Yahaya and one of his executives Mr. Sakibu were on Radford FM Tuesday to announce the Good News to the Sissala people.
