The Sissala East Municipal Assembly shall in 2019 procure 20,000 elite grafted cashew seedlings to farmers under Planting for export and rural development.
However, last year’s seedlings were 60,500 that the Assembly distributed to farmers showing a sharp decline which has been explained as it is to get farmers to adopt and cultivate the habit of growing trees alongside farming with government taking the lead.
Meanwhile, The programme is a decentralized national tree crop programme to encourage economic growth and improve the household income of rural farmers.
“Beneficiary farmers would be provided certified seedlings, extension services and business support and as well regulatory mechanisms”, the MCE Mr Karim Nanyua has announced during the first quarter session of the Assembly.
He said plans are far advanced to take delivery of the seedlings for distribution by the third week of June 2019 and therefore entreats farmers to embrace the programme.
Under rearing for food and jobs which are in a pilot phase in some selected districts, Sissala East Assembly is preparing to revamp Guinea fowl project ahead of the government rearing programme.
There have also been the recruitment of professional and sub professional agricultural extension staff numbering 12 to strengthen the staff strength of the department Agric to reduce farmer extension ratio in the area noted for farming.
